fileno(FILEHANDLE)

     fileno FILEHANDLE

             Returns the file descriptor for a filehandle.   Use-
             ful  for  constructing  bitmaps  for  select().   If
             FILEHANDLE is an expression, the value is  taken  as
             the name of the filehandle.
